The law safeguards the confidentiality of the bond between a client and their psychotherapist, ensuring that information shared remains protected without explicit written consent. However, there are exceptions to this rule. In cases of suspected child abuse or elder abuse, we are mandated by law to promptly report such incidents to the appropriate authorities. Similarly, if a client poses a credible threat of serious harm to themselves or others, we are obligated to take necessary steps to ensure safety, which may include involving law enforcement or informing potential victims. Additionally, if a client expresses intentions of self-harm, we will strive to collaborate with them to establish safety measures. In instances where cooperation is not attained, we may take lawful actions to secure their well-being without their consent.
